Baby’s First Swimming Lesson: What to Pack in Your Swim Bag

Your baby’s first swimming lesson is exciting, but working out what to pack can feel like a small expedition. The good news is that once you have a simple swim-bag routine, getting out the door becomes much easier.

Here’s a practical checklist for Australian parents, from the right swim nappy to what you’ll need for the trip home.

1. A reusable swim nappy

If your baby or toddler isn’t toilet trained, a swim nappy is usually the first essential. Unlike an everyday nappy, a swim nappy is designed for use in water without swelling up like a standard disposable nappy.

Choose the correct fit before lesson day. A snug fit around the waist and legs matters, so check your swim school’s requirements too.

Shop reusable swim nappies for babies and toddlers.

2. Baby or toddler swimwear

Pack swimwear that is comfortable, easy to change and suitable for the pool. If you’re heading outdoors afterwards, remember sun protection appropriate for your child and the conditions.

3. A waterproof wet bag

Once the lesson is finished, you’ll have wet swimmers and a wet swim nappy to carry home. A waterproof wet bag keeps those items together instead of mixing them through the rest of your bag.

It can also become a useful everyday item for daycare, beach trips, spare clothes and messy toddler moments.

Shop waterproof wet bags.

4. A towel and change of clothes

Pack a towel plus a complete dry outfit, including a fresh everyday nappy if your child still wears one. Having everything together in the same section of your bag makes the post-swim change much easier.

5. Your own pool essentials

If you’re getting in the water too, don’t forget your own swimmers, towel and change of clothes. Add anything your swim school specifically requests before the first lesson.

What should a baby wear under a swim nappy?

A swim nappy replaces an ordinary nappy while your child is in the water. Don’t automatically put a standard disposable nappy underneath, as ordinary nappies absorb water and can become heavy and swollen. Always follow your pool or swim school’s rules, as some venues have specific double-nappy policies.

How many swim nappies should I pack?

For a regular swimming lesson, one swim nappy plus a spare is a sensible starting point. For holidays or longer pool days, you may want more. Read our guide to how many swim nappies you need.

Make swimming lessons easier from week one

The easiest swim bag is one that stays mostly packed. Keep your reusable swim nappy, wet bag and other regular essentials together, then add fresh clothes and towels before you leave.
