  • Cloth Nappies - Q & A

Our Modern Cloth Nappies have been tested and trialled by a number of Mums now and lots of great reviews have been received.

Some of you may want to try but have lots of Questions. I hope this email helps- but if there's anything else, please just ask.

    Q. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH THE MODEN CLOTH NAPPIES?

    A. Every 1-2 days max. We don’t recommend leaving them longer than 2 days.

Place in a bucket/pale preferably with holes in it to allow air flow while waiting to be washed.

     Washing Routine Example

Everyone will develop their own washing routine to suit their lifestyle, here’s an example washing routine to show you how simple it can be...

Each morning- Run a pre-wash cycle containing yesterdays used nappies and last nights night nappy. Place pre-washed nappies into a dry pail once finished.

Every second night- Run a main-wash cycle containing all pre-washed nappies from the dry pail. Make this a long wash at 40-60 degrees. Hang to dry the following morning.

    Q. BEFORE FIRST USE- PREPPING YOUR NEW CLOTH NAPPIES

Why is it important to prep your new cloth nappies? Like any absorbent fabrics (think bath towels or tea towels) the fibres need to be softened and ‘worn in’ to help them reach their maximum absorbency. If you want to, you can repeat the prep steps 2-3 times on the inserts to really maximise absorption.

    • Soak your inserts overnight in warm water
    • Wash both inserts & covers with detergent
    • Completely dry inserts and covers
    • Your new nappies are now ready to use!

    Q. HOW TO WASH YOUR MODERN CLOTH NAPPIES

    A. Feel free to use your washing detergent of choice – ensuring that it doesn’t contain bleach, fabric softeners (as this will reduce absorbency) or any whiteners. Keep in mind what you wash in essentially will be in contact with babies delicate skin.

    Q. WHAT ARE THE INSERTS MADE FROM?

    A. Our inserts are made from eco & skin-friendly material, they can be either stuffed in the pocket or laid directly against the skin (or one in each if you require using 2 inserts)

The nappy covers can be used for up to 2-3 nappy changes, if baby has not pooped! It also will depend on your personal preference and the sensitivity of your babies’ skin, if you notice any irritation- change the cover with each time you change baby.

     Q. CAN YOU USE BARRIER CREAMS?

    A. Barrier creams and rash creams can build up into the fabric over time and reduce absorbency of the fabric – we recommend using a liner such as bamboo liner when using these creams or a non oil based cream.

    Q. BABY HAS BEEN CHANGED, NOW WHAT?

    A. Flush any solids down the toilet, then give the nappy a rinse under the tap before than storing in a dry nappy bucket.

Always rinse the nappy, this will dilute any wee helping to minimize staining & cut down on smell.

    Place in a dry bucket.

    Q. CAN I PLACE THEM IN THE DRYER?

    A. We recommend LINE DRY as an economical and environmentally friendly option, as well as being a better option for the life of your nappies. Tumble Drying can reduce absorbency over time.

    Q. HOW DO I USE MODERN CLOTH NAPPIES WHEN OUT?

    A. Its really easy, just make sure you take a wet bag or at least bag to pop them into until you get home. Change your child as normal, If you happen to be near a toilet, tip out any solids and roll up your cloth nappy closing it off with one of the buttons. Store any dirty nappies in your wet bag until you get home then wash as normal.

    Q.DAY OR NIGHT USE?

    A. Modern cloth nappies are designed to be worn for the same length of time as a disposable nappy during the day. Keeping in mind cloth nappies work by absorbing liquids into the fabric liners where as disposable nappies have gelling agents to do this, so depending on your baby cloth nappies may need an extra change or if they are big wetters try adding an extra insert!

    Q. WHAT TO DO FOR NIGHT TIME USE.

    A. For night time use, you may need a little extra boost to get you through the night, depending on the duration your baby sleeps too. Our modern cloth nappies can be used with either 1 or both of the inserts for extra protection and additional Inserts can be purchased if required, especially for those who are Olympic wetters!
